Backcountry avalanche reports on the go.
Avalog is an open platform that makes getting up-to-date avalanche reports and sharing backcountry information easier. By combining official avalanche warnings with community created data, Avalog provides relevant information on backcountry conditions wherever you are.
Avalog’s founder approached Turtle to design a mobile first user experience with a visual design inspired by 70s ski graphics and trail signs. The challenge was to apply a retro style in a tasteful and user friendly manner optimized for on-the-go backcountry adventures.
Avalog's design system was based on three key pillars - speed, progressive information and flexibility. We designed the mobile site to load lightning fast, relying on simple infographics and minimal photography so nothing gets in the way of the information you are after.
Avalog progressively discloses information as users dig deeper into conditions on any given mountain. Our user journeys are designed to reveal the most relevant information first while allowing users to dive deeper for more data. This approach is also reflect in the individual informational components.
We created a flexible style guide and component library that can accommodate a wide range of weather condition reports and also provide Avalog the foundation design tools to build out future elements, components, and pages.
The result is a quick and lean site that loads fast and presents easily digestible information. The infographics are simple and legible, while maintaining the unique retro UI design flavour we had in mind. Thanks to the design Avalog provides the most relevant and enjoyable experience for tracking backcountry conditions wherever you are.
